Rescued ‘Fraidy Cat’ Finds Compassion Among Fellow Felines, Lets Guard Down And Shows His True Self

Often, stray kittens spending their first few weeks of life fighting for food, water, and defending themselves against the oddities that city streets and back alleys can bring them will develop a hardened, distrustful exterior. Their sweet-natured selves aren't high on the pecking order in the wild, and unfortunately, they must hide who they are on the inside.

However, when people are aware of their surroundings and notice tiny kittens out of place on abandoned sidewalks, they can begin a journey toward the reemergence of their inner beings.

Roughly three months ago, a tiny white and grey kitten was rescued by a concerned citizen from the rustle and bustle in the wilds of urban life. "Fraidy Cat," as the young male kitten was dubbed, truly lived up to his name upon his arrival for much-needed care at the Richmond Animal Care & Control (RACC).

RACC Communications Director Robin Young said the little fuzzball was so scared in his first few days in the shelter that he would "fly out and bounce around the room." Little did Fraidy Cat know, it was his surroundings that would assist him through troubled times. This cat isn't shy anymore.

"Sometimes, they don't come around that quickly," Robin said. Most likely, Fraidy Cat got accustomed to the other cats in the shelter. Yet, his loving caretakers and volunteers also spent time with him and were patient enough to allow him to observe for a while, then step out of his defensive shell.

Once Fraidy Cat had consistent food, water, and a realization that he wasn't in danger, he loosened up his high-strung nature and began socializing with the other cats around him. Robin explained that shy cats typically benefit from having another cat around them. Even if they aren't bonded pairs, it gives them a like-minded peer they can get to know and trust.

With his striking yellow eyes widened by the new and exciting things around him, he looks ready to venture into the world on his own terms. Since he's no longer afraid, Fraidy Cat will need a new name.

Luckily, that will be up to his new family. Yet, that means he also needs a forever home.

Fraidy Cat would do very well in a home where there's another cat to hang out with and show him the ropes about being a loved, well-maintained cat. He's sure to give any owner willing to be patient with him a lot of attention.
